Subject: [*] AppleTalkOn Extension
Here is a companion to my ToggleAT FKEY for PowerBooks (and other machines).
It is called AppleTalkOn and it is an appe (background application or
application extension) that runs all the time. It snarfs very little CPU
time and about 20K of memory. It basically does nothing except at shutdown
and launch. At shutdown it records the state of AppleTalk, turns it on
and then quits. When it starts back up on the next boot, it turns AppleTalk
back off if it was off when it quit and then goes to sleep. Not too tricky
but it manages to keep AppleTalk loaded into memory, and that's its major
goal.
There are some minor caveats and side effects. Most notably, if you have
File Sharing turned on then it will start up before the machine will restart.
This is bogus but I haven't felt the need to come up with a workaround.
Anything I did do would involve taking control of File Sharing and I am
hesitant to do that. You will notice that your machine won't restart if you
are suffering from this problem. Also, this will not work if you crash,
but AppleTalkOn will turn AT on, regardless, next time it boots and/or
restarts.
Anyhow, it's a hack and its free. It's also available on ftp.apple.com in
/pub/pugh.

Subject: [*] auspice-25.hqx
AUSPICE Version 3.0.1
Auspice is a reminder system which will automatically remind you of events
at any time the Auspice program is running, even if it is in the
"background" while you are using another application. Normally you will
make Auspice a "startup" application (see below) allowing it to
automatically start and run all of the time your Mac is running.
Developed by Wayne K. Meyers, 1283 Mary Lee Way, San Jose, CA 95118.
(408)264-5847 or (infrequently) CompuServe 70771,3574. The Internet
address is 70771,3574@CompuServe.COM. Auspice was developed for my own
use and as an exercise in Macintosh C programming (Symantec's THINK C is
outstanding!). Auspice is free and you are welcome to distribute copies.
If you find it useful or if you find an annoying creature or feature, let
me know.
New features in version 3.0.1:
Version 3.0.1 is a major rewrite eliminating the Auspice init and
allowing each Auspice reminder to be displayed at a specific time rather
than just at startup as in previous versions. This requires the use of
MultiFinder with System 6 or the use of System 7.
Custom Holidays you can now add "custom holidays" for holidays
outside of the USA or to display additional holidays, anniversaries etc.
The standard USA holidays can be turned on or off. The holidays are
stored in the Auspice Preferences file along with other preference
information.
There is now an option to automatically save (write to disk) after
every change to a reminder.
Auspice can now be "iconized", closing all open windows and displaying
one small window. It can be "deiconized" by clicking on the small icon
window.
Improved the reminder entry dialog, allowing better use of "tab" to
move to next field, "shift tab" to move backwards, and "up" and "down"
arrow keys to change dates and times.
A Find feature was added to allow searching for a reminder containing
a specified message, date, or time or portion thereof.
An Export feature was added to allow all reminders to be copied to a
text file. This was added primarily to allow the reminders to be printed
>From the exported text file since Auspice does not yet have printing
capability.
New features in version 3.0:
This version, with extremely limited release, contains a bug in the pop
up memos.
New features in version 2.6:
Weekday names and month names now obtained from System resource to get
the names in correct language if a non USA System is in use.
New international version created with Netherlands holidays.
New features in version 2.5:
An option to have the Auspice Init automatically write a record of each
reminder issued. This record is written into a TEXT file. The TEXT file
is selected via the "History" menu item in the Auspice application.
New features in version 2.4:
An option to have the Auspice application access data files other than
the primary data file located in the startup System folder. This was
primarily designed to allow access across a network to see the calendars
of others in a workgroup.
Automatic handling of international dates in Day/Month/Year order if
appropriate for the country.
New international version created with New Zealand holidays.
New features in version 2.1:
Added a "Calendar" window to display calendar for selected month/year
and to show the number of warnings and events scheduled for each date.

The accompanying PICT file is a 640x480 16-bit color scan of the above named

Subject: [*] PCalc 1.0.2
Enclosed is a binhex file containing a submission for your archives.
It should replace pcalc-101.hqx all over the world...
PCalc is a neat simulation of a programmable scientific calculator.
Please note that it *requires* System 7.x.x.
If you use System 6.0.x or earlier, here is what you are missing:
Programmable functions via a simple mini language.
System 7.x.x savvy:
Can be controlled & programmed via Apple Events.
Balloon Help for every button, menu & dialog item.
Resolves Aliases.
32-bit clean.
Multifinder aware.
Large 16+3 digit display.
Hierarchical menu of user functions.
Includes many functions for converting between different weights and
measures.
Quick, one click, conversion between decimal, hexadecimal and binary
numbers.
AND, OR, NOT, XOR, ROL, ROR and other extra functions in hex and binary
mode.
30 named user constants, 10 for each mode.
'Undo' of any action.
'Minimize' button to shrink the calculator when not in use.
Enhanced graphics when viewed on a 256 colour or 16 gray (or better)
screen.
Colour graphics and help screens are stored in separate plug-in extensions.
Runs on any Mac with System 7.x.x or greater, with or without Color
Quickdraw.
And of course it's freeware. If you only download one calculator this year,
give this a try...
Version 1.0.2 fixes some bugs that caused problems on colour macs, notably
those with 16 and 24-bit displays. Vast speed increases too on some 8-bit
screens. Shouldn't turn bright orange at inconvenient moments either. Some
other silent bug-fixes and support for the ',' key as a decimal separator.
(More importantly, there are a ton of new easter eggs ;-)

Right On Time is a personal time manager. It features a calendar, To-Do list,
reminders, and even a menubar clock. You can set up repeating events, be
warned ahead of time about upcoming events, archive old events, assign
categories to events, play sounds, manage your to-do list, etc. (similar
features as Now Up To Date, First Things First, DateBook, and others) The
calendar is useful just by itself for looking up dates and printing out
monthly
calendars. Right On Time requires system 6 or later, takes advantage of color
monitors, and is system 7 friendly (supports required AppleEvents, and 1
custom
AppleEvent). No extensions are needed! This is a demo version limited to 5
events. The real version is shareware, $15.
Some new features in version 2.0 include:
You can double-click to edit events from the Monthly view, nicer List view,
to-do items, menubar clock, more preferences, hot key to bring to front,
easier
to enter times, many other enhancements, and a few bug fixes.

It depends from modem bundle to modem bundle. Some modem mfgs sell just
the bare modem, some come with non-hardware-handshaking cable, some come
with a hardware-handshaking cable.
Not to worry, though. MacConnection sells hardware-handshaking cables
that work just fine. If you're buying it to run a BBS, though, you may
have to roll your own according to the special needs of the BBS software
you're running.

Subject: (R) "Hardware-Handshaking" Modem Cable
Hardware-handshaking cables are easier to find than they were when the
reports on the subject, available in the info-mac archives, were
written. You can find them (clearly labelled as such) in the catalogs
and stores. In fact, you may find that cables without such labels
actually are, as I did, but of course without the labelling, you can
hardly count on it.
I don't know whether any modems come with such a cable (in fact, I'm
so ignorant, I don't even know of any modems that come with Mac cables
at all - is anyone better informed?). I also don't know of any
software that makes full use of the cable - everything I've tried
forces you to choose between flow control and reliable phone-line
hangup. (Again, is anyone better informed than I? I'd *love* to hear
different!)

Subject: 2 Print PostScript files on TI PS17? (A)
In 11-67, Ronen Mir reports problems printing a Canvas 3.0 document on his
TI PS17, although the document prints OK on the office Apple Personal
Laserwriter.
The error message given is "limitcheck" caused by the setscreen command.
Limitcheck errors usually mean the printer doesn't have enough memory to
handle the document. Solutions? Add memory to the printer, simplify the
original Canvas document, try to use alternate ways of printing (such as
placing the document into PageMaker and printing with the Aldus driver
instead of the Apple driver).
One method that is worth a try is to use the recently-posted Print2Pict 3.5
utility to print the document to a pict file and then, in turn, print that
pict file to the printer. Since the Personal Laserwriter handles the file
without problem, it's likely that the PICT format is easier to handle than
the complicated postscript code, so simplifying the document to a PICT
first might make printing easier for the TI PS17.

Subject: 33MHz MacIISi Seems To Work!
Hi ya,
for what it's worth...
while reading comp.sys.mac.hardware, I read some articles about putting a
50MHz clock in place of the original 40MHz clock and putting heat sync's on
the processor chip and the other big chip near the processor. It seemed to
work just fine.
I then decided to get real piggy and try a 64MHz crystal (Since I had
installed
sockets so clock replacement was easy) and I'll be dipped if it didn't work.
I then modified my other MACIISi and it also worked with the 64MHz clock.
I have a math co-processor and 17MB of ram in one of the machines and 5MB
and no co-processor in the other.
The only thing that I couldn't get to work at the full 64MHz was a cash card
which did work with the 50MHZ clock.
Speedometer 3.05 shows the following information:
40MHz 64MHz
cpu 5.47 8.72
Graf 8.07 10.81
disk 1.74 1.77
Math 14.59 20.33
so, for about $10. worth of parts, the thing runs significantly faster.
I have run all of my applications and everything runs correctly and *much*
faster. After a few days, all is still OK.
The only problem I have encountered that will not go away is the startup

There's been a small discussion on aliases in the last few digests,
so I hope you don't mind my adding to it. Thank you :)
Here's a problem I've been having that I haven't been able to resolve:
I cannot open a file via drag&drop onto an app's alias *unless* the
alias resides on the same drive as the app. If the alias resides on
a different hard drive, then the best I can do is double-click on it
to launch the parent app, but drag&drop fails to work---even after
rebuilding the Desktop.
Any suggestions for a fix? Thanks.

OK, so I can guess from the name of the utility that it has something
to do with aliases, but many progs don't have such descriptive names.
It wouldn't hurt to say AGAIN what the prog is supposed to do, eh?
Now, I'm sure that I've been guilty of this, myself, but I promise to

Subject: bad startup screen
Mr. Merkelson,
I don't know what PRAM is? Normally startup screens are only black and
white, except when you create them using a color graphics program. My
suggestion is to go back to the color graphics program you created your
startup screen with and make sure it appears in the correct colors, and
replace the old StartupScreen file in the System Folder.
If however, you are referring to the Apple StartupScreen, "Welcome to
Macintosh", then check the resources of a copy of FINDER using ResEdit
to find out if the StartupScreen color version has disappeared.
**** WORD OF WARNING ***
If you edit the FINDER resources, be sure to keep two extra copies of finder
in hand to reinstall on your machine, if your resource edited FINDER crashes.
If it is only the startup screen that is failing to appear in color, DON'T
PANIC! "If it ain't broken, don't fix it." If all your color graphics
programs, and color printouts appear in color, then the things that need to
opperate in color still are. If you need a color startup screen to let you
know you are in color mode, simply time the startup in color and B & W, and
use these times to judge whether you are in color or B & W.
Good Luck.

Subject: BBEdit, large files, and a retraction (C)
At the risk of running this one into the ground... Peter Lewis' comment
in v11n065 that BBEdit is memory limited and needs a file-sized
partition for editing prompted me to investigate since I *knew* I had
never increased BBEdit's default 512kB partition. (By way of explanation
I should mention that I come from a background in which disk-based editors
are common, and there is no practical limit on the size of editable file.)
In any case, the answer seems to be that BBEdit grabs temporary memory as
needed to open whatever sized file one is requesting. Thus on my system
(IIci, 8MB physical, 16MB virtual), BBEdit is perfectly happy to open a
5MB file. as long as the amount of free memory exceeds 5MB. If I load up
applications until the "largest unused block" is less then 5MB however,
it will refuse to open the file. So the bottom line for editing really
big files is that one way or another, you have to have enough free disk
space to allow allocation of a second file's worth of space. This could
either be used for System 7 virtual memory, which BBEdit will use, or it
must be used for a scratch copy of the file to be used by a true
disk-based editor.

I don't know about the ROM checking, but Omnipage 3.0 apparantly checks

work with a US system. At the time we bought the software the US price

four times more expensive in europe! When I called them about this, they

I have lately been told that the way Fifth Generation (Salient?) prevent
their
US software being used in Europe is related to the software checking ROMs
to
see if they are American ROMs or European, thus ensuring that Europeans
are
obliged to buy software here at inflated prices, rather than ordering from
Europe.
I don't think there are any differences in the ROMs at all.
However, if you're refering to AutoDoubler, at least an
earlier version checked the country code in the System File's
internationalization resources. When I installed Japanese
software on my Mac, suddenly AutoDoubler would not load.
As you can imagine, I was rather pissed.
However, I don't think this has anything to do with inflating
software prices. Fifth Generation offered to send me the
"international version" free. They were kind of vague about
how it differed, although I got the impresion that the intent
was to handle compression in a language-specific way. I let
them know in no uncertain terms that disabling an already-installed
copy was a serious fault, and besides, 99% of my files were
in English.
I never switched to the International version, however; instead
I changed my country code to 0 (USA) with ResEdit. I haven't
seen any sign that they've repeated this mistake with 2.0, but
I haven't tried it myself, either.
In short, I don't think this is an anti-bootleg ploy, I think
it was just an isolated lapse into stupidity by an otherwise
well-meaning and reputable company.
(I don't know if it was Salient or Fifth Generation who made
this blooper; it was right around the time that Fifth Generation
bought them out...)

Don't know anything about ROMs, but I believe some programs (e.g. from
Broederbund) check which language version of the operating system is running.
Thus a US version of a program would only run on a US version of the
operating system. Only non-European companies can do this. It would be illegal
under European Community competition law for, for example, a British company
to make version of its software which only run under say British, French and S
nish operating systems respectively, and charge more for the French and
Spanish versions.

Hello,

address on the Macs with a built-in Ethernet connection, such as the Quadra
700, 800, 900, etc.?
I asked Apple's tech. folks on AppleLink and they told me I would have to
buy something like EtherPeek from the AG Group. Asante provides a utility
with their Ethernet cards, so I assumed that Apple would have a utility as
well, but I guess not. I know that you can find the node address with
MacTCP, but I don't have that yet. I suspect someone has written a little
utility to find the node address. I know that you can find the node addresses
of the Apple Laser printers with Ethernet connections by using the newest
version of the LaserWriter Font utility.

We do not use the MIF to MacWord converter. However, I would suggest that

the release that provides an MIF to RTF converter, along with some other

Subject: FutureBasic Offer for academics
Fellow students and Academics,
Get FutrueBasic for only $89.99. (suggested list $299.99)
(See below for details)
I recently had an opportunity to try a great programming
tool for the Macintosh: FutureBasic. It's like nothing I've
ever used. (I know this sounds like and Ad, but I'm
serious.)
If you're like me, you have studied both C and Pascal, and
have never created a satisfactory program that you could
distribute to my friends or submit to professors. Maybe
you're as tired as I am of HyperCard's excessive size or
SuperCard's sluggishness. Personally, I want a way to write
real Mac App's without having to learn everything in the
original six volumes of "Inside Macintosh."
Recently, Peter at Zedcor let me try FutureBasic. Was I
surprised. I expected it to be like the Basic I learned in
junior high. FutureBasic was much better. It has local
functions, records, arrays, 80 digit percision math,
QuickTime, Balloon Help, supports inline assembly, and much
more.
FutureBasic includes on-line help for built-in statements
and functions, on-line help that allows you to copy and
paste functions for common jobs (like accessing files or
drawing PICT's) and paste them into your program, and you
can personalize the help files. (Why couldn't Think C have
this feature included, instead of selling a separate
product?)
After four days of casual play and partially read manuals,
I've compiled a fully functioning appliction with icons,
color graphics and sound!
FutureBasic is cool. The included manuals explain the
concepts and techniques for writing real Mac programs. Most
of the examples in the manuals are provided on disk to speed
you along. (I think the manuals are the best part of the
package because they really do explain everything a
beginning Mac programmer needs to know and understand to
write real Mac App's.)
With FutureBasic you can create DA's, Extensions, Control
Panels, XCMD's, or even code resources. Better still, the
language can grow with you, so that when you want to write
something really complicated, FutureBasic can handle it.
If you're like me, you want a taste of real Mac programing, without
spending all your time learning how to program. Give FutrueBasic a try
(there's a 60 day money back guarantee). It's as easy as Basic and nearly
as powerful as C.
I told the guys at Zedcor that there were tons of students
and professors who could benefit from somthing so simple yet
powerful and they said, "OK, Tell them that they can get
FutrueBasic directly from us for $89.99." (That's $200.00
off retail for the full version.)
If your interested, call Peter at 1-800-482-4567 for details.
Or you can bother me.

Subject: Hiding LaserWriter
Peter Jorgensen wrote on Info-Mac a while back about hiding a LaserWriter from
most users on a network:
"Yes, Two ways, on harddisk machines you can install LaserWriterLockOut. For
more complete protection, you can change the LaserWriter's type, so normal
LaserWriter RDEVs will not see it. You will also have to create a special RDEV
for choosing the changed LaserWriter. I don't know if this has been tried
under
System 7.0. It involves the use of ResEdit and some PostScript code to change
the LaserWriter's type. I'll send complete instructions directly to those who
want them."
I have the need to hide a LaserWriter from everyone except the users in one
area. LaserWriterLockout does the opposite: hides the printer from the Mac it
is running on. Unfortunately, Peters posted address
(PJORGENSEN@COLGATEU.BITNET) no longer seems to work. If Peter is "listening"
or if anyone else received the "complete instructions", would you please post
them to the digest or send them to me directly. Presumably they include the
postscript code for changing the LaserWriter's type and the ResEdit info on
what to hack in the printer driver to match the new type.
Thanks alot.

I know that SoundEdit will do this, as will SoundEdit Pro, but they are not
shareware as far as I know. However,I'm sure there is a shareware utility
with a similar feature set to SoundEdit. Here's what to do: Make a recording
of your voice. Then add an echo with a short delay (about .016 seconds) at
about 60-70% strength. Then, reduce to pitch and speed up the tempo as
necessary to give it the right tone...hope this helps.

If you are planning on placing a slide maker (A.K.A. film recorder) in your
lab, I recommend connecting it to a machine and leaving it there (i.e. do
not detach and reattach it). This saves on wear-n-tear, but the font files
for the slide maker take up a lot of room, so there is no reason to have
them on many systems. These fonts are used in place of the fonts you
normally use, there is special software to make the substitution.
I have MS DOS users of my slide maker (Montague FR-1) all the time. They
bring their file to my lab on a floppy disk in TIFF (usually) format and
I open it in a graphics program (e.g. Canvas or PhotoShop) and print it.
Many other file types can also be opened by these programs. Also, there
presentation packages that are on both platforms (MS PowerPoint, Alsu
Persuation).
In summary, it is easier to solve the problem using software to translate
files among platforms and software. Put the recorder on a moderately fast
computer and leave it there.

> I use and enjoy 7.1, but am now starting to get weird crashes. For

several people I know (myself included) are now getting "Application unknown
has unexpectedly quit beause of a Type 1 error" crashes. What the heck is
an "application unknown" anyway?
... Apple has this program manager that is responsible for keeping track of
what application is running at the moment. System 7 is not true multi
tasking, in which each application can run at the same time. It constantly
has to switch between open applications, those in both the foreground and
those in the background, to see if it needs to do anything for that
application.. The foreground application just gets more CPU cycles aloted to
it than the background application. The program manager is responsible for
switching and keeping track of what is running.
Ever do a force quit and the application name that it asks if you want to
quit is not the name you expected to see? That is because in the instant you
pushed that button the Mac was cycling through the background applications
instead of those in front. The same thing can happen during a Out of Memory
error. (Type 1 is memory). The mac looses track of where it is and cant
tell which application it is quitting, because, it already has started
shutting it an application down due to a lack of memory , so the application
has been closed out of memory, and therfore it is not in memory for it to
check to see what application it was. TYpe ones are caused by many things.
If it is Quark you are using, update to version 3.11, it corrects some out
of memory problems. Otherwise, allocat some more ram to the application.
Hope this clears it up a bit without stirring up too much mud.

dealing with large files. I frequently work with files ranging from

lowest I can get away with.
It does take time for such files to open, e.g. a 2meg file with line

at how quickly it can do complicated find/replace's (using grep) that

Your information is out of date by about six months; BBEdit 2.2 and later
can read files larger than BBEdit's MultiFinder partition by making use
of temp memory. Files are still RAM-resident, so you need the memory
-somewhere- (either in real or virtual memory), but the maximum file

out the cartridge, open it, and turn the roller to get to all of it, and to
use a more acceptable (socially and functionally) cleaner, but this worked

We use recycled cartridges in our HP III and HP II laser printers, and
our IINTX. For text, the recycled cartridges are, for the most part,
excellent. We use a company called QLC. They use a denser toner
which gives us 4000-6500 printed text pages per cartridge. Our
maintenance people tell us that the recycled cartridges are not good
for the printers. We do have a problem with "bleeding" on dark
graphics from our NTX. We have determined that the problem is with
the printer itself, not the recycled cartiridges, but we cannot be
sure if the recycled cartridges are to blame, or the fact that we
have printed 100,000 pages in two years, and not always with paper
that is "laser compatible."
In short, aside from the environmental and cost benefits, I would
recommend using recycled cartridges, and would say that they are
not inferior to new ones.

I also wish we had a fast slide viewer for the Mac and one that
didn't cost the equivalent of a week's pay. My apologies for bringing
up the Atari ST lately, but I keep wishing for items that I had for it
which I don't for the Mac. One program for the ST is called BLASTER and
can shoot, in auto-blast mode, about five pictures a second (!!!)
across the screen. It is smooth and there is no hesitation. Cranking
the rate down to a more viewable 1 picture/second is a mere user command
on a radio button with the mouse. The ST, by the way, was an 8mhz,
68000 brained machine. It is amazing to me how a $450.00 computer can do
this.
Surely, QuickTime could possibly be configured for quick slide
viewing.
My LC has some hesitation that is slightly annoying when using QuickTime but
for a slide show, I'd bet the results would be nice. Perhaps it is in
the Mac FAQs, the steps to convert GIFs to Quicktime frames, --- maybe
full screen frames, also?

Why not just make a folder, called say "Drop launch", and put all your
drag-n -drop aliases (or applications themselves) there. Put the folder
itself
in the Startup Items folder. Open the folder, view by name, size it so it
just

After adding the StyleWriter II extension to my system I began getting
an error when using On Location. The On Location error is "902 Unable to

with the StyleWriter II driver. The solution for me was to add back in the
StyleWriter I extension and select it when I want to use On Location. No
word from either Apple or On Technoloy as to who's going to provide the

Subject: System 7.1 Monitor CP Problem
Here's an odd problem I hope someone has an answer for:
I recently gave in and installed System 7.1 (from 7.0.1). The first thing I
noticed is that upon selecting DepthGuage 2.5.4, it responded that the monitor
settings could not be found and I should create them (or something to that
effect) using the Monitors CP. When I selected the Monitors CP and hit the
"Options" button, I got a response that "Sorry there is not enough memory
available to show the options right now." I tried turning off all the exten-
sions to no avail. I have never seen the problem with DepthGuage again, but I
always get the Monitors problem. I say it is a problem since I have 20 Meg
of real RAM, of which over 17 Meg is free for the Monitors CP to use.
I have a Quadra 700 with a VRAM expansion installed.
Thanks for any advice,

try suntar, it works wonderfully! I regularly tar files on my Sparc
at work, bring them home and untar them with suntar. It even runs
under Liken, the macintosh emulator for sparcs. There may be some
limitations on whether it handles all versions of tar, but it seems to
work in most cases.

Yes, there are several choices:
Stuffit Deluxe includes a tar translator
There are also the following available at sumex-aim (Info-Mac archives):
./util/suntar-132.hqx
./util/tar-30.hqx
One of these should fill the bill for you.

Subject: What is thick Ethernet (R)
Dominick,
In reference to your post> Subject: What is thick Ethernet?
Ethernet wiring comes in three flavors:
1) 10Base2, also known as Thinwire. Uses RG/58/U coax cable, with BNC
connectors. This is the most common type of ethernet cabling. It
uses 'T' connectors to tap in the various devices and both ends of
each segment must be terminated with 50 ohm BNC terminators.
2) 10Base5, also known as Thickwire. Uses "standard ethernet coax", a
much beefier cable than the Thinwire stuff. It is not, however,
Twinax! Both ends of the segment are terminated with 50 ohm N-series
terminators. The cables with DB-15 connectors on them are known as
AUI (Access Unit Interface) cables, and are used to connect a device,
such as a computer, with a DB-15 interface on it to a transceiver,
which then taps directly into the Thickwire cable. There are also
transceivers which will convert the DB-15 interface to 10Base2 or
10Base-T.
3) 10BaseT, which uses 4-wire twisted pair (telco cable) and RJ-45
(wide-body modular plug) connectors. This is convenient because it
allows the use of standard telephone wiring, and can be 'punched
down' on standard telco blocks to connect the various devices.
Which one you use depends on what equipment you own, how it's configured,
and what your needs are. They each have different specs in terms of
what the max segment lengths and network spans are, and how many nodes
per segment they allow.
This is just a brief overview. For more info, there are a lot of good
books on the subject. Check your library.

Subject: What is thick Ethernet?
Thick Ethernet is the original type of ethernet. I think it's
still useful for long runs; I don't think either 10Base-T or
thin ethernet allow the same long runs that the original did.
However, it is expensive and awkward.
that thicknet wiring typically has DB-15 connectors on either end.
No, that's just the connection betwen the interface and
the transceiver. The real ethernet connection is via
a large-diameter coaxial cable.
1. Are those called AUI-connectors?
Yes.
2. What does AUI stand for?
Dunno.
Thicknet wiring consists of twinax cable.
No it doesn't! It is a single coaxial cable.
3. Is there a designation for it that's comparable to "RB-58"?
Maybe. The stuff I've always used has been labeled as being
"Ethernet cable", complete with markings for where to cut it
for minimum-length segments.
4. How do you hook up twinax to the DB-15 connectors?
You hook the interface to the coax via an external box called
a transceiver. Thinnet uses these too, but usually these days
it comes on the board. Still, if you have something with the
AUI interface and no Thinnet connector, you can get an external
transceiver for thinnet, to.
Networking mailorder catalogs I've looked through offer Ts, terminators,
etc.
for thicknet wiring. So far I haven't seen any Ethernet equipment that was
rigged for this standard. If it accommodates thick Ethernet it is
typically
through a DB-15.
Believe me, you wouldn't want to have to run the thicknet directly to
the back of your computer. It is stiff and heavy and difficult to
manage. A lot of computers these days, it would just flip over due to
its weight and stiffness! That's why the transceiver is separate;
you can put the coas cable where it's convenient to put the cable, and
then the transciever cable to the computer where it's convenient to
put the computer.
Thinnet is so much more flexible this isn't a issue, and so
all you need is to run the cable directly to the computer,
stick in a T and hook it to the computer.
5. In which instances are those connectors used instead of the DB-15s?
Always.

Subject: Why macapp slow
OK. I downloaded and scanned your doc's. You made it in oopl macapp.I
noted
something in the object oriented course that I suspect was inherited by
macapp.
They had scripts that erased all *.o files to 'avoid confusion'. Units should
be separately compilable and save you time in that you don't have to recompile
everything when you test an implementation. I got away with modifying the
scripts so I wouldn't have to start from scratch each time.
Object pascal makes programmer put into main program all units used by
used units. Not so object modula which the browswer I got would also parse.
Apple should then be familiar with Modula feature that the import ( uses
analogy in modula) in the implementation may be 'hidden' and not force
recapitulation in the main program. I suspect that this is related to the
play its safe and avoid confusion attitude of before.
I heard that apple-ibm was going to make pink less fussy than macapp,
perhaps without any royalty contract of macapp. All my knowledge is vague from
old info-mac digests and computer club meetings. Maybe apple mill find the
need
to make the same improvements that Wirth did in his language.
I hope macapp isn't only in C because I have developed an affection for
modula and pascal.

Subject: Word 5 problem
LAWA @ IAPE.AFRC.AC.UK describes a problem with cursor positioning in Word 5.
"the insertion point flashing cursor appears to be to the left of the
last character"
I've only seen this in italics, when it can be very difficult to identify
the real cursor position. However, I wonder if the problem he describes
is related to the one I'm having.
This happens (mostly?) in paragraphs formatted with an "ALL CAPS" or small
caps style. As I add characters, the text already entered alternately
changes between the caps style and the actual case entered (usually Initial
Caps/Title Case). Looks wierd as I do it.
Existing text is sometimes displayed incorrectly, lacking only the caps
attribute of the style. Reapplying the style often corrects it, but it can
change back when I put the insertion point somewhere else.
Files print OK and display OK on other Macs. Removing all extensions
provided a temporary cure - putting them back did not cause the problem
to re-occur until a few days after I'd put them ALL back. Not much help.
Anyone seen this one? All ideas welcome! I'll supply more detail if
anyone needs it, and summarize if appropriate.

Hi Netters --
Has anyone ever gotten stuck with a write protected read me file with useful

Opcode's StudioVision comes with such a file. There must be a way to defeat

having to print out pages and pages of what I don't need -- and a way to get
it into a useful word processor like Nisus or WordPerfect so that I can

Any ideas?

Subject: XWindo graphics conversions and Software Locking...
Two questions:
1) Is there anything that exists (PD, FW, SW, etc) to perform
software
locks on individual folders? To keep prying hands out of the folder,
but still keep it visible (yes, I admit it. I don't want people
rummaging through certain system folders.)
2) is there a way of converting mac files to XWindows background
bitmaps, as well as XDO and any other major Unix graphics formats?
Conversion on either end would work. I have access to photoshop
if I need to do some format conversions, but that won't do anything
usable other than TIFF and GIF for XWindows, as far as I can tell.
Thanx a BNDL. (a little ResEdit humour there)
